Understanding Air-Based Heating and Cooling Systems

As heat waves become a regular summer concern, more UK homeowners are considering active cooling systems. While new-build homes in England now follow Part O regulations to limit solar gains, many existing homes struggle with overheating, especially in bedrooms. This has led to growing interest in air-based heating and cooling systems that go beyond simple wall-mounted units. The shift is partly due to the UK’s changing climate, with prolonged hot weather making passive cooling measures insufficient. Homeowners are increasingly recognizing the need for integrated solutions that address both temperature control and indoor air quality, particularly in older properties where retrofitting passive measures is challenging.

These systems can heat, cool, and circulate air throughout a home, often integrating filtration, humidity control, and ventilation. Richard Soper of The Unico System compares it to car air conditioning: “You can have that same effect in your home – and you won’t even think about it; it becomes second nature.” This analogy highlights the seamless integration and convenience these systems offer, transforming home comfort into an effortless experience. Unlike portable units, which provide temporary relief, integrated systems offer year-round climate control, making them a long-term investment in home comfort.

How Do Air-Based Systems Work?

Many fixed air-conditioning systems are actually air-to-air heat pumps. In cooling mode, they extract heat from indoors and release it outside. Reversible models can also provide heating. Unlike air-to-water heat pumps that work with radiators, these systems deliver heated or cooled air directly. The efficiency of air-to-air heat pumps lies in their ability to transfer heat rather than generate it, making them a cost-effective option for both heating and cooling. Additionally, their compact design allows for easier installation in retrofits compared to traditional heating systems.

There are several configurations: single-split systems serve one room, while multi-split systems connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Ducted central systems use an indoor air handler to distribute conditioned air through ducts, offering more even coverage. Each configuration caters to different needs, with ducted systems being ideal for whole-home comfort and split systems providing flexibility for targeted solutions. The choice depends on factors like property size, layout, and specific cooling or heating requirements.

Whole-Home Comfort or Targeted Solutions

A central air-based system can become the primary source of heating and cooling, potentially replacing radiators. It allows for zoned temperature control and responds quickly to adjustments. However, some homeowners may prefer targeted installations for specific problem areas, like overheating bedrooms. Zoning capabilities enable precise control over different areas of the home, ensuring personalized comfort without wasting energy. For example, a bedroom can be cooled at night while the rest of the house remains unaffected, optimizing efficiency and comfort.

This provided both heating and cooling while preserving the building’s heritage aesthetic. The project demonstrates how modern HVAC systems can be seamlessly integrated into historic properties without compromising their character. Improving Indoor Air Quality

Air-based systems enhance indoor air quality through filtration, removing dust, pollen, and pet dander. When combined with MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery), they offer a full solution for temperature, humidity, and ventilation control. This combination is particularly beneficial for households with allergy sufferers, as it reduces airborne allergens while maintaining optimal humidity levels. MVHR systems also recover heat from outgoing air, improving energy efficiency and reducing heating costs.

These systems ensure year-round comfort but require careful planning. Critical factors include ductwork design, outlet placement, and acoustic performance. Regular maintenance, such as filter cleaning, is essential for optimal operation. Proper planning ensures that the system operates quietly and efficiently, with well-placed outlets providing even air distribution. Regular maintenance not only prolongs the system’s lifespan but also ensures it continues to deliver high-quality air and consistent comfort.
