The North American Hardware and Paint Association (NHPA) has introduced an online training initiative intended to help retail managers and staff sharpen their leadership, merchandising, and financial capabilities. The Foundations of Retail Program delivers six self-paced courses that are specifically designed for the hardware and paint sector, and it offers start dates that become available each month.
Flexible courses for new and experienced leaders
The six-course curriculum spans periods ranging from four weeks up to twelve weeks, which enables participants to fit learning into their regular work routines. Each module concentrates on a distinct facet of retail management, such as developing leadership qualities, building effective teams, tightening financial controls, and refining merchandising tactics.
For instance, the Leadership Essentials module assists managers in pinpointing their personal leadership style and core strengths, while the Leading Your Team segment covers communication methods, conflict-resolution techniques, and performance-management practices.
Two courses that focus on merchandising address store-level execution and buyer-focused strategies. A separate Mentoring module supplies a structured framework for employees who are tasked with guiding junior colleagues.
Hands-on learning with real-world application
Participants are encouraged to put lessons into practice right away. Sara Brewer, a store manager at S.W. Collins Co., explained that the merchandising class prompted her to reevaluate both store layouts and product assortment. She added, “Every week, I enjoyed putting what I learned into practice.”
Each learner works alongside a mentor assigned by their own company; the mentor reviews the learner’s objectives and assists in turning coursework concepts into actionable improvements. By the conclusion of a module, participants complete a self-assessment of their business unit and put forward recommendations aimed at strengthening key areas.
From training to certification and beyond
The RMCP expands upon the Foundations curriculum by adding advanced subjects such as business strategy, marketing, and higher-level leadership. This certification pathway incorporates live sessions, webinars, and continued mentorship to help retailers embed new strategies into daily operations. More than 300 retailers have taken part in the learning experience, gaining new skills that have allowed them to manage and drive their businesses to higher levels of performance.
