Fliplab combines IKEA or Bunnings modular frames with bespoke doors and drawer fronts for personalized cabinetry solutions.

A Melbourne-based company is providing an affordable solution for upgrading flat-pack cabinetry without the expense of fully custom joinery. Fliplab allows homeowners to combine standard modular cabinet frames, such as those from IKEA or Bunnings, with custom-designed doors, drawer fronts, and panels tailored to their preferences.

Modular design meets custom finishes

The business was launched by Sacha Leagh-Murray, a former executive at Laminex Australia. It addresses a market gap by offering premium finishes for off-the-shelf cabinet boxes. Customers purchase structural components from retailers and pair them with Fliplab’s surfaces, which use locally made materials from brands including Laminex and Polytec.

Leagh-Murray observed that many consumers prioritise visible details like colours, textures, and profiles but struggle with the cost of full customisation. At Laminex, I saw how much people cared about the colour, material and detail of their joinery, but also how hard it could be to get the result they imagined within their budget. The approach lets them achieve a high-end appearance without the full price tag of custom joinery.

Design choices include minimalist flat fronts, bold painted edges, shaker-style cabinets, scalloped details, or woodgrain textures. A small kitchen project starts at around $2,000–$5,000, while larger installations begin near $6,000. One customer in Perth saved thousands by using Fliplab doors for wardrobes in a four-bedroom renovation instead of fully custom robes.

Traditional custom joinery involves significant labour and material costs, but Fliplab’s system focuses only on visible elements. The company operates an interactive showroom in Melbourne where customers can test materials and finishes firsthand. Virtual consultations and nationwide shipping further simplify the process.

Many clients arrive with inspiration, mood boards, photos, or a sense of the space’s intended atmosphere, but lack a clear plan for execution. Fliplab helps translate those ideas into functional, personalised cabinetry.

Budget-friendly customisation

Fliplab’s pricing adjusts based on the level of customisation. Basic flat fronts keep costs manageable, while detailed profiles or high-quality materials increase the price. The company’s online design tools and in-store expertise help customers visualise their selections before finalising orders.
